Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme Visa
(subclass 187)

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187) visa (commonly referred to as the ‘RSMS visa’) allows skilled workers, who are nominated by their employer in regional Australia, to live and work in Australia permanently.

The Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187) visa has the following two streams:

  • Direct Entry (DE) stream – The DE stream is closed to new applications with the introduction of the Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 494) on 16 November 2019. Visa applications can only be made for a RSMS visa in the Temporary Residence Transition stream if the applicant is a transitional 457 worker or a transitional 482 worker at the time the application is made.
  • Temporary Residence Transition (‘TRT’) stream – The TRT stream is for applicants who have been nominated by an approved Australian sponsor for a job in regional areas of Australia. Generally, an applicant will need to be under 45 years of age and meet the valid skills, qualifications and English requirements (unless exempt).
Sanctions For Sponsoring Employers Who Breach Sponsor Obligations

In general, a successful TRT stream applicant will need to have the correct occupation on the Department’s Occupation’s List, have valid corresponding licence/registration, have an IELTS equivalent of band 6 in each component, be under 45 years of age and have worked for their Australian employer for 3 of the past 4 years.
